Hi everyone I`m considering a purchase of a tractor for awhile now. I`ve gained alot of my present knowledge in these forums. (thanks). But I`m still unsure about what to do. I have 8 acres on a lake in Ct. About 2 acres are landscaped (grass, beachfront, paths, flower beds etc.) Another 2 acres is grass field. The rest is wooded with some hills. I also maintain a private road (right-of-way)that runs thru the property. My one manpower machine with wheelbarrow and shovel attachment is getting finicky. Doesnt always start right up and when it does start it doesn`t always remain running long enough to complete the job quickly. I`m not sure of the differences attachment wise between the 2 machines. I will definitely need a backhoe on either machine, maybe a york rake (rake the beach sand, help grade the road) I will do some loader work (gravel in trenches for drainage , sand/mulch spreading every spring). I would also like to reclaim the edges on the field (overgrown with saplings/brush)I will keep my ingersoll graden tractor to do the mowing (except for the field maybe). Any input will be appreciated. I tried to provide most of the details of my situation without indulging my habit of rambling on.

If you plan on using a backhoe go with the B21, it will out dig any 3 point unit in this class and size of tractor. Also think about installing/removing the backhoe, one can remove or install the backhoe on the B21 in less than 10 minutes. A 3 point backhoe will take an hour or more to install or remove plus once installed it will not be as capable as the B21 unit. One more thing about 3 pt. backhoes is most tractors are not designed to run this type of attachment day in and day out and as a result have had their backs broke. Where the B21 can run a hoe day in and out because it's designed with this in mind, it's an industrial type tractor and built heaver than other tractors in this size with a full length frame. A lot of tractors out there use the motor, transmission, and axils as the frame and build the rest of the tractor around it thus creating failure points when the tractor is under the stress a backhoe can put on it. ....

Paul, if I had your situation it would be a no-brainer: B21 hands down. If $$$ is an issue, look for a used B20 instead. Like BCM said, the B20/21 combination will run circles around any any general purpose compact (up to about 40 hp) when it comes to loader and backhoe work. I didn't go that route because I wanted to use a belly mower and didn't want another tractor just for mowing. But if you are not finish mowing, then the B20/21 is the best alternative. ....
